SUMMARY:Annual Lower Cowichan River Cleanup 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Quw’utsun Sta’lo’ (Cowichan River) is the heart of our valley. With everything the sta’lo’ gives us\, it’s our turn to give back.\n\nJoin the Cowichan Watershed Board\, Cowichan Tribes\, and the Cowichan Valley Regional District for the 16th annual Lower Cowichan River Cleanup on Sunday\, August 23rd! All are welcome and no experience is necessary!\n\n\n9:30AM – Sign-in and meet your team leader10:00AM – Welcome10:30AM – Cleanup begins12:00PM – Volunteer BBQ begins\n\nWhat to bring? Sturdy shoes that are okay to get wet\, sunscreen and a hat\, a water bottle\, and gloves (if you have them). You may also bring swimwear\, a snorkel\, and/or flotation!\n\n\nAt the Cleanup\, we come together to learn and work as a community. With opportunities to swim\, wade\, walk\, or paddle\, you get to choose your own fun and adventure! And by joining us\, you can help make our river a safer and healthier place for creatures and people alike. Afterwards\, enjoy a free BBQ lunch with neighbours\, friends\, and connections new and old.\n\nSummer low flows in the sta’lo’ call for a community-wide push to protect our watershed. Our annual Cleanup helps to remove staggering amounts of garbage from more than 15-kilometres of the river before fall rains can carry it downstream. Working together\, we can make a big difference!\n\nThe Cowichan Watershed Board is a partnership between Cowichan Tribes and the Cowichan Valley Regional District. It exists to provide leadership for sustainable water management and to protect and enhance the environmental quality and quality of life in the Cowichan and Koksilah watersheds and adjoining areas.\n\nQuestions? Contact our River Cleanup Coordinator\, Katia Bannister (she/her) at rivercleanup@cowichanwatershedboard.ca.

SUMMARY:Public Meeting-Cedar Trail-Hemer Park to Boat Harbour
DESCRIPTION:Come out with your neighbours and advocate for the trail from Hemer Park to Boat Harbour!\nThis trail\, used by the community for years and years\, was blocked by a tall metal fence at the end of the park when the current owner took possession.  Recently\, a proposal for development of the property\, including the former rail line\, was submitted to the RDN.  The subdivision drawings show twenty-four five acre lots\, with access from Holden Corso Road.  The development plan is not yet available for public view\, but people who have seen it said the rail line trail could be accommodated with minor modifications.  Somehow\, the legal right of way for the section of the rail line from Hemer Park to Boat Harbour is unclear.  At a meeting a few of weeks ago at the Cedar Heritage Centre\, Jessica Stanley\, our RDN director\, noted that NOW is the time to speak up for the right of way to be reinstated.  Once the development proposal goes by this first stage of approval\, other considerations such as water and traffic may be addressed\, but the right of way must be decided now.\n\n

SUMMARY:Miyawaki Restoration Method
DESCRIPTION:Locally run Kiki nursery will come to Wildwood to demonstrate the Miyawaki Method for Restoration. Register at www.ecoforestry.ca/upcoming-events \nKiki Nursery’s expertise in ecological restoration will use Wildwood Ecoforest as an intact forest setting to help participants observe natural layering\, soil conditions\, and ecosystem interactions. Begining with a short guided walk through Wildwood Ecoforest where these ecological processes will be explored in their context\, we’ll explore how to bring these forest principles into urban environments to revive degraded spaces\, lawns\, and compacted soils. You will be introduced to core principles\, including soil restoration\, dense planting of diverse native species\, and early-stage maintenance\, with an emphasis on locally appropriate materials and realistic timelines for establishment and growth. \nSCHEDULE : – 20–30 min forest observation – 20 min introduction to the Miyawaki technique – 10–20 min Q & A
