SUMMARY:CWB Speakers Night: The Mystery of 6PPD-Q: Coho\, Cars\, and a Deadly Chemical Conundrum
DESCRIPTION:In 2007\, thousands of juvenile coho salmon were discovered dead in Fish Gut Alley in Duncan. For nearly two decades\, the reason remained a mystery. Today\, we finally understand why. \nJoin the CWB\, Dr. Erik Krogh\, Qutxulenuhw Tim Kulchyski\, and Haley Tomlin\, to learn about the case of 6PPD-Q\, the toxic chemical found in tires that poses a deadly threat to young salmon. Hear about the discovery\, the mystery\, the work done to solve it\, and what’s being done to mitigate the threat. The evening will begin with a presentation from Dr. Krogh about how he\, along with other researchers at VIU\, have been working closely with the BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF)\, First Nation partners\, and community members from Victoria to Campbell River to learn more about how\, where\, and with what severity 6PPD-Q is impacting urban streams. After his presentation\, Dr. Krogh will be joined for a panel discussion by Biologist and CWB Board member Tim Kulchyski\, who was one of the first people notified when the initial die-off was discovered in Fish Gut Alley\, as well as BCCF Biologist Haley Tomlin. \nLearn more about our speakers ⬇️: \nErik Krogh (PhD\, P.Chem.) is a Professor of Chemistry at Vancouver Island University and co-Director of the Centre for Health and Environmental Mass Spectrometry. He teaches environmental chemistry and maintains a nationally funded research group of undergraduate and graduate students. Recently\, he has led a large-scale project characterizing tire wear toxicants in urban waters on Vancouver Island. \nQutxulenuhw Tim Kulchyski is a Natural Resource Consultant in the Cowichan Tribes Lands and Self-Governance Department and serves as a member of the Cowichan Watershed Board. He has worked with a variety of clients assessing upland\, freshwater\, and marine ecosystems for over 20 years. \nHaley Tomlin (RPBio\, BSc) has a background in aquatic ecology\, environmental monitoring\, project management\, and coordinating citizen science programs. She joined the BCCF team in early 2022 and has been working as a biologist for nearly 10 years. Previous roles have involved developing and implementing a tire wear toxicant monitoring program\, a forage fish spawning habitat monitoring program\, and small-scale restoration projects\, all have involved working closely with community-based stewardship groups. \nThis Speakers Series is hosted by the Cowichan Watershed Board\, with the support of VIU Cowichan and funding from the Watershed Security Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop-Advancing The New Forest Act
DESCRIPTION:The New Forest Act has reached a new stage. Originally created by Jennifer Houton\, Dave Weaver and the Boundary Forest Watershed Stewardship Society (BFWSS)\, this proposal has been presented to numerous communities across the province and most recently in September to relevant government Ministers. Now the society\, having done its work\, is dissolving though the document and all the associated files will be preserved for the people of BC to continue promoting.  One of the last steps for the BFWSS is to hold this free online training workshop for people who want to understand the proposal\, talk about it in their own communities\, and take it to MLAs\, local governments\, organizations\, and other decision-makers. Watch video on the New Forest Act here: https://youtu.be/lummcIgVOEc \nUnder the New Forest Act\, ecological requirements come first. They determine what must be protected\, what must be restored\, and what land remains available for harvesting. Only then is allowable harvest determined. In other words: Ecological limits → land-use decisions → allowable harvest. You don’t pick a harvest number first and then arrange the landscape to produce it. \nThe BC government is currently promoting it’s Working Forest Landscape Model. Because both it and the proposed New Forest Act have three zones the two approaches can sound similar. They are not. The government’s model puts new zones and terminology over the existing forestry system. It retains a Working Forest Zone where timber production remains the priority\, while government continues to plan around a provincial harvest target of approximately 45 million cubic metres a year. \nWe’ll cover: \n\nwhat the New Forest Act proposes – and why the changes need to be in law;\nhow Protect–Restore–Harvest differs from the BC government’s current three-zone approach;\nthe key questions government has asked about the proposal\, including restoration\, ecological limits\, communities\, First Nations\, workers\, and fire;\nhow to respond when government points to existing programs or planning initiatives and says it is already addressing these issues;\nhow to explain the New Forest Act clearly without becoming a forestry expert;\nhow to talk about the proposal with MLAs\, local governments\, organizations\, and others;\nhow to make a clear\, concrete ask; and\npractical resources you can use after the workshop

SUMMARY:Nest Box Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Join us to help maintain and monitor nest boxes. Every autumn we monitor and maintain the over 100 nest boxes that are placed around the marsh to provide habitat for tree swallows and other native marsh dwelling birds. Monitoring the boxes gives us an insight into how successful the boxes are at providing habitat for our native birds\, and ensures they are clean and prepped for next spring when the swallows will return.   \nIf you want to join us or learn more about this event please email us at phaedra@somenosmarsh.com.
