DESCRIPTION:Every 1st Monday of the month – Transfer Beach Native Plant beds between the Kinsman Hut and Amphitheatre. Led by Nikki Toxopeus.  Come and visit us there between 10 and noon as we weed and collect seeds.  We had a blast last Monday as Jeremiah shared his knowledge and enthusiasm for all the native grasses and forbs in our beds.  We labelled the plants\, made notes\, and know more on how to best harvest them for Sunny Glades.

DESCRIPTION:2nd Saturday’s of the month – meet at Dogwood Drive in the Holland Creek Trail head parking lot.  Led by Jillian Wheatley\, RP Bio.  We will continue with invasive plant removal and care for the native plants we added here last fall after removing the ivy.  The invasives have grown from the garden waste dumped here and the berries spread by the birds.  Please bring your own tools and refreshments and we will have spare gloves and tools. DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to be kicking-off our Fall Speakers Series with Dr. Tara Martin! \nTara is a Forestry Professor\, Lead Scientist for the Martin Conservation Decisions Lab\, and the inaugural Liber Ero Chair in Conservation at the University of British Columbia. She is a global leader in the field of Conservation Decision Science – combining predictive ecological models with decision science to inform what actions to take\, and where and when to take them to achieve conservation and resource management goals. Through her work with the Conservation Decisions Lab\, Dr. Martin and her team seek to understand\, predict\, and inform decisions about the impacts of global change on biodiversity and natural resources. To do this\, they work closely with Indigenous communities\, supporting their research needs and centering Indigenous values\, knowledge\, and sovereignty in co-developed\, collaborative research. \nDr. Martin’s talk will be hosted by Dr. Shannon Waters\, Deputy Provincial Health Officer\, Planetary & Water Health\, member of Stz’uminus First Nation\, and Cowichan Watershed Board member. \nWe’re looking forward to learning more about Conservation Decision Science and Indigenous resurgence on Quw’utsun territories with Tara and Shannon on September 21st—and we hope you’ll join us! SUMMARY:Herring Rising Forum
DESCRIPTION:Herring Conservation & Restoration Society (HCRS) and W̱SÁNEĆ Hereditary Chiefs (WHC) support a Pacific Herring Declaration to pause the commercial herring fishery in the Strait of Georgia to allow stocks to recover. At the Herring Rising Forum evidence will be presented on the legal question: Have the commercial fisheries had a significant role to play in the decline of the herring and herring roe fisheries in W̱SÁNEĆ territory?  Featured speakers are Hereditary W̱SÁNEĆ Chief Eric Pelkey\, leading the legal challenge\, John Rich\, the lead lawyer with Ratcliff and Drs. Amanda Bates\, Loren McClenachan and Sara Ohayon from UVic. \n\nThe legal letter to DFO has secured a meeting with DFO (date proposed is mid-September) in which the WHC will present the scientific team including key W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge keepers.  The goal is to share the most recent evidence specifically with regard to “finer scale changes in herring spawning patterns and fisheries\, herring distribution\, and the potential for sub-stock structure in the Strait of Georgia” which DFO indicated they were open to in their letter. The WHC will pursue the recommendation to bring that evidence into the court room to force a pause of the fishery while this evidence is examined.\nWHC and HCRS now have an MOU in place with Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) so that anyone who wants to donate to the Herring Rising campaign can now receive a charitable receipt from GSA which will go towards this shared campaign. https://georgiastrait.org/work/indigenous-sovereignty-stewardship/herring-rising/\nHCRS\, WHC and UVic have established various research partnerships and have over $130\,000 dedicated to research questions regarding the ecological and social values of herring to the region and the W̱SÁNEĆ communities which will build the case for restoration. Half of this will go to the nations themselves to build their argument.\nWe will also be supporting the challenges to the Individual Transferable Quota Systems (ITQS) which have created the issues of monopolies and control of the industry. Strong Coast have written an excellent article on this that relates to the Canfisco control of the herring industry (80%) and the role of ITQs for getting the fishery into the mess it is.\n\nOur goal is to raise $50\,000 that evening preparing for the next legal steps with DFO. The intention is to provide the best case possible at this stage to avoid it going to the huge costs of a court battle. The HCRS are still gratefully receiving donations from our Herring School members for maintaining our community organizing-role which is nimble\, inclusive and keeps the larger institutions linked and grounded to the communities that they serve.
