Herring Rising-Nature Cowichan Speaker

November 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Nature Cowichan is very pleased to have Sydney Dixon, Marine Specialist with Pacific Wild, outline 14 arguments against the commercial herring fishery. These arguments highlight the fishery’s ecological impacts, declining economic value, and shortcomings in management. Herring are worth more alive, sustaining marine food webs and coastal economies, than they are through commercial harvest. These pressures, combined with climate change, pollution, and industrial activities, further threaten their survival.

Pacific herring are a foundational species in British Columbia’s coastal ecosystems, supporting salmon, seabirds, whales, and countless other species. They also hold immense cultural significance for coastal First Nations. Despite their ecological importance, herring populations have declined dramatically, with spawning grounds disappearing across much of their historic range.
