NC Speaker: Nature’s Recovery at Mt. St. Helens-Joseph Antos

Dr. Joseph Antos was studying population dynamics of a tree species in the Cascade Mountains in 1980 when his Ph.D. project area was suddenly blown up by a volcano! Undaunted, he switched to studying the effects of tephra (volcanic ash) deposits on forest understories at Mount St. Helens. Four decades of subsequent work there, and in related studies, has resulted in a substantial increase of understanding about how forest understory plants respond to disturbance.
